Family IAP
Family, Incident Action Plan
- Create a point of contact that everyone in the household knows to call in the event of a disaster.
- Preferably out of state
- They can contact the rest of the family for you
- You’ll have one central location the whole household can call to find out about each other
- Food & Water (Yes! You need to get off your touché & get this done ASAP)
- Dried foods and canned goods, should be increased by 40% and rotated through your diet
- Add two cases of bottled water to your food stores and rotate them through your diet
- Plan of action (in the event your house becomes uninhabitable)
- Where are you going? What is your 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th choice? Seriously!
- How are you getting there?
aa. If by car, is your route planned?
bb. What if the highways are too busy, blocked or destroyed? Can you get out without them?
cc. Do you maintain atleast a half tank of fuel in your car at all times? You should!
dd. Do you have backpacks with clothes water & non-perishable food (enough for 3 days) in them?
- Do they know you’re coming?
aa. Have they planned for you (i.e. food & water) to stay for an extended period of time?
bb. Do you have a key, incase they are not home at the time?
cc. Is there any issue with you bringing the family pet?
dd. Have you planned for them to come to your house (in return)?
- Going to a hotel? Got your credit card?!
- Transportation in and out of a disaster zone
- Do not drop below half a tank of gas (your going to spend the same amount money anyway).
- Carry between $100 & $300 in small bills, nothing bigger than a $5
- Have a planned route to wherever it is you need to get to (with alternates, for traffic, etc).
- If you have a bicycle take it with you (if the car breaks-down you don’t want to walk).
- Keep a 72hr kit in the trunk incase you have to walk home from work or are stuck there for a few days.
- Keep up the maintenance on your car (otherwise it will break when you need it most).
- Securing an inhabitable house that you have to leave for security reasons
- Take a page out of the hurricane preparedness book: plywood cut to the size of the door & window frames. When you are ready to leave, use a screw gun or cordless drill to secure them into the frames with 2” screws. A house that is boarded up is not as enticing as one with breakable windows.
- If you have no need to secure the garage then leave the door open so it is not broken by someone trying to find out what is inside.
